Ironman / Iron distance triathlon

2.4mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run

The iron distance event has rapidly grown in popularity in recent years with more people than ever wanting to take on the greatest challenge in triathlon. People used to say 'I will run a marathon before I die' now they say 'I will be an ironman!'

An Iron distance race can be completed by an elite triathlete in sub 8 hours but can take a novice athlete up to the 17 hour 'cut off' point to complete the distance.

Pacing, hydration and nutrition play a massive part in the completion of an ironman. As this distance is almost entirely an aerobic event, the stronger your aerobic base, the faster and more enjoyable your experience will be.

Ironman swims are all 'mass starts' with every athlete in the water at the same time. The bike leg is a whopping 112 miles. Regular drinking and eating of bars and gels are essential to maintain energy and hydration levels. The marathon is the final event and the 26.2 miles will require mental toughness along with weeks of training to get you to the finish line.

Preparation for an ironman requires a great deal of training and commitment over a 20-40 week period. Before entering into an iron distance race consider the possible impact on work and family as it always helps to have the backing of those nearest and dearest.

It is an amazing experience and once you are an 'ironman' nobody can take that away from you!

If your 'A' race is more than 20 weeks away then your programme will start in the 'Base phase'. This phase of training is where you adapt to the training volume and build and maintain a good level of aerobic fitness. This helps lay the strong foundations from which the speed work will be built upon. Base training also helps an athlete to reduce the chance of injury when moving into the 'Race Phase'.

If your race is within 20 weeks from enrolment you are ready to go into the 'Race phase' of training. In this phase we look to further develop your aerobic system but also add speed and strength work into your training to enable you to reach peak fitness in your 'A' race.
